The country's governing coalition has agreed to ban children under 14 from using social media. Similar decisions are being considered in Denmark, France and Spain, among others.
However, implementation is delayed, largely because it is difficult to find solutions that do not require everyone who wants to use social media to identify themselves.
We will no longer stand by while these platforms make our children addicted and often also sick, said Austrian Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler.
The government is expected to produce a bill in June. According to Alexander Pröll, head of digitalization for Chancellor Christian Stocker, privacy will be protected using “technically modern methods.”
