Houses in several neighborhoods were damaged, as were private cars. Military equipment and facilities were burned and destroyed, the army spokesman Gaspard Baratuza said in a situation update on Wednesday.
The explosions are reported to have started at an ammunition depot in Musaga, south of Bujumbura, and the cause is described by the army as an “electrical accident.”
The 13 confirmed deaths were civilians. It is unclear whether any military personnel were killed. Police have previously spoken of dozens of deaths.
