"Representatives of the Social Democrats, Socialist People's Party, Unity List, Radikale Venstre and Alternative have recommended that the incumbent Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen lead negotiations on the formation of a government," the royal house writes in a press release.

Denmark's outgoing Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced that she wants to form a government that stretches from left to center. The announcement on Wednesday came after an election in which historically few Danes supported her party.

She is now beginning the first talks to form a government with parties that are at or to the left of S. But the negotiations will be difficult:

"It's a headache for us as a nation, but we have to figure out how to cooperate," said Frederiksen, who has submitted the resignation of the current government.

Going out hard

On the blue side, they are now doing their best to persuade Lars Løkke Rasmussen's Moderates - who have a wavering role - to think in ways other than left-wing.

Danish People's Party's Morten Messerschmidt is coming out strongly and demanding an answer in the post-election debate as to whether Løkke Rasmussen cannot imagine supporting a blue government. Danish People's Party can renounce ministerial posts if the Moderates also do so.

"I have answered 'no, thank you.' Wasn't that clear?" Løkke Rasmussen replies harshly.

Messerschmidt asks whether ministerial posts or substantive policy are most important to Løkke.

It is the latter. But that does not mean we need a bourgeois government, answers Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

Unclear messages

He does not want to say clearly who he wants to be prime minister, but he makes it clear that he does not believe in the government formation Mette Frederiksen is outlining, as it would require influence from the parties on the far left.

However, he prefers that Mette Frederiksen be the one who is first tasked by the king to lead the negotiations that are now pending, rather than the Liberal Party's Troels Lund Poulsen, who has been put forward by several of the parties in the blue bloc.
