Swiss media report that the accident was caused by strong winds. A video published by the newspaper Blick shows a gondola violently rolling down a hill.
One person was in the gondola when the accident occurred and died when it crashed, the police said at a press conference.
The person has not been identified.
No other people have suffered serious injuries; however, many were stuck in their gondolas and evacuation work was still ongoing at 3 p.m.
