The Italian denial risks fueling tensions with the United States, writes Corriere della Sera, noting that Senator Marco Rubio said that after a war with Iran, the United States may be forced to reevaluate its relationship with the NATO defense alliance.

The announcement came after Italy received a flight plan from the United States, without Washington, D.C., consulting Italian authorities, and when the warplanes were already in the air, according to the newspaper.

Since the plane in question was neither on a logistical nor a routine mission, the flight was considered to be outside the countries' bilateral agreement, and a stopover was therefore denied.

The move comes the day after Spain's Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced that the country's airspace is closed to American aircraft participating in the war with Iran.

"The USA will be REMEMBERED," writes US President Donald Trump in a post on Truth Social about France's refusal to allow military planes en route to Israel to fly over French airspace.
