The talks are to be held on Tuesday in Switzerland with Oman acting as a mediator and courier between arch-enemies the US and Iran. Confirmation of the meeting came from Tehran.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Tehran for Geneva late Sunday, leading a diplomatic and technical delegation to hold a second round of nuclear talks and to conduct a number of diplomatic consultations.

Ready for compromises

Ahead of the talks, Iran said it was ready to discuss compromises in a deal on its nuclear program if the United States considered lifting sanctions. Iran also stressed its position that the responsibility for reaching an agreement lies with the United States.

US President Donald Trump, in turn, threatens to attack Iran if no agreement is reached.

The US military is simultaneously strengthening its presence in the region and near Iran with, among other things, aircraft carriers, extensive supporting naval forces and air support.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also sought to increase pressure on the negotiations with statements on Sunday afternoon. He said that "all enriched uranium must be removed from Iran."

Infrastructure destroyed

In a speech in Jerusalem, Netanyahu continued to make further demands.

"Secondly, there must be no capacity to enrich uranium in Iran," he said, adding that "all enrichment equipment and infrastructure must be dismantled."

Netanyahu's third demand was to resolve issues related to ballistic missiles.

Previously, Netanyahu and Trump have agreed to increase pressure on Iran by seeking to stop the country's oil exports to China, senior sources told the media company Axios.

Trump has previously issued a presidential order imposing punitive tariffs on countries that trade with Iran.
