"A person was shot on one of our buses while it was stationary at the bus stop," Sophie Gunnarsson from the public transport company SL's press service told TT.
The police announced shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday that the relatives of the man who was shot have been notified and that the crime has been classified as attempted murder.
The perpetrator fled the scene and had not yet been arrested by evening.
The police announced earlier in the evening that they had secured video material from the bus, which was seized.
No one else was physically injured, but several people witnessed the shooting, which occurred around 3 p.m.
"Many people are shocked," said police spokesman Daniel Wikdahl.
Taken care of
The 20 or so people on board were taken care of outside the bus. The bus driver was one of them.
It was the driver who alerted his employer Nobina about the incident, and the company alerted the police, Gunnarsson said.
The driver has been removed from service.
"I don't know how he's feeling," Gunnarsson said.
The bus stop is located near several schools - from preschool to municipal adult education. All preschool children and students were kept indoors after the municipality raised the alarm, but by 5 p.m. everyone except those who needed urgent support had been allowed to leave.
"A lot of students have seen what happened," said Martin Widholm, head of school at Tyresö municipality.
Saw scared students
Eder Pacheco goes to a community college, which is just a few meters from the bus stop. One of his classmates was on the bus when the shooting happened, he said, but he was in class himself.
"I saw students who were scared," he said.
The police are collaborating with the municipality, which has established collection points and crisis support.
Erik Kainulainen lives in the area and serves on the municipality's culture and leisure committee for the Christian Democrats. He has children who attend a nearby school.
"I was sitting at home and saw blue lights, so I ran out and checked," he said.
"It's worrying, because we have teenagers ourselves."
In December, Granängsringen, which is a stone's throw from the bus stop, was added to the police's list of vulnerable areas. The area has been troubled, Kainulainen believes.
"Young people should have a future of becoming professional footballers and things like that, not holding weapons. I'm disappointed and pissed off," he said.
