The Iran-allied Houthi movement in Yemen is entering the war; it was confirmed on Saturday morning. In a statement, the movement announced that it had directed ballistic missiles at military facilities in Israel - and promised continued attacks in support of Iran and allies in Lebanon, Iraq and the Palestinian territories.

The Israeli military previously stated that a rocket from Yemen - the first from the Houthis since the start of the ongoing war - was shot down without causing any damage.

Later on Saturday, the Houthi movement announced that it had also fired a cruise missile and launched a drone. The Israeli military announced that the cruise missile was shot down in the Red Sea and that the drone, which was aimed at southern Israel, was also shot down.

New front

The Houthis' joining the war means a new front is opening on the Arabian Peninsula. Many analysts have previously raised concerns about attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, which the Houthis also attacked during the Gaza war in support of their ally Hamas. On Saturday, Houthi leader Mohammed Mansour said the movement was "considering closing" the Bab al-Mandab Strait - the gateway to the Red Sea - which would severely affect shipping, Haaretz reports.

The Israeli military said overnight that it had carried out several strikes against Iranian "regime targets across Tehran." At noon on Saturday, it said it had completed another wave of attacks.

According to Iranian state-backed media, last night's attacks targeted, among other things, a university in Tehran. Around 40 Iranians are reported to have been killed in attacks in various parts of the country.

The UN's atomic energy agency, the IAEA, says the area around Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant was attacked late Friday - the third attack on the facility in ten days.

Attack on airport

The Iranian attacks also continue, with several rocket salvos fired at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, among other places. About ten Israelis were slightly injured when Iranian rockets were shot down over the Jerusalem area, Israeli rescue services said shortly after noon on Saturday.
