The first competition of the year on the world tour was held in João Pessoa, Brazil. Olympic and World Championship gold medalists Åhman and Hellvig won 2–0 in the final.
"The first competition of the season is always special and we wanted to give it our all. We are so happy that we managed to play well in every match," says Hellvig.
The first set started evenly before the Swedish duo pulled away to take it 21–16. The second set was similar to the first and ended 21–18 to Åhman and Hellvig.
"We didn't really know where we were in terms of form, and I've had a knee injury, so it feels very good to come back and start the season in the best way possible," says Åhman.
Swedish World Cup runners-up Jacob Hölting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson advanced to the round of 16.
