Cheerful on the Tokyo Stock Exchange as Nikkei 225 and TOPIX climb 1.2 percent

Both the Nikkei 225 index and the broader TOPIX climbed 1.2 percent in early trading on Wednesday.

Stock exchanges in China, South Korea, and Hong Kong are closed for the New Year holiday.
