Earlier this week it became clear that the Norwegian audience at the Bislett Games will not be able to see the Swede compete. He will be getting married in Cannes, France, the following weekend, June 13-14, competition director Steinar Hoen told NTB, which Duplantis himself was not entirely happy about.

"I might have wished he wouldn't say anything. I was a little shocked that he said it, but it is what it is," says Duplantis ahead of the World Indoor Championships in Poland.

But now Duplantis says that the couple married at Stockholm City Hall on March 7 of this year, just five days before Duplantis set a new world record of 6.31 meters.

"Yes, you have to do it," he says, explaining that the couple had to register their marriage in Sweden before the wedding ceremony abroad.

“I feel half-married”

But when asked if he feels married, he replies:

"Yes, in a way. I feel half-married. But I don't have the ring on. Not until the real ceremony in June. I'm kind of keeping with the American tradition and waiting for the ceremony," he says, showing off his ring finger.

No ring when we got engaged, I don't feel like I've earned it yet.

Armand Duplantis and Desiré Inglander are seen as a "power couple" and the fact that they are getting married is world news.

"It feels a little strange. I'm grateful for it. There's a lot of love. But we're trying to find a balance to keep it a little private. And it feels a little uncomfortable to talk about it," Duplantis says.

Wanted a summer wedding

He has said he has to set a world record because he has a wedding to pay for.

He says that with a twinkle in his eye. "The wedding won't be cheap, but he can afford it," says agent Daniel Wessfeldt, clarifying that the wedding has not been sold to anyone.

The agent also says that it will be a fairly private wedding and not too big.

It's the families and closest friends.

Wessfeldt doesn't want to reveal the exact date, but he says it's in the middle of the racing season because the couple wanted a summer wedding.

Corrected: A previous version incorrectly stated that there is only a wedding party in Cannes. The correct statement is that there is also a wedding ceremony.
