The idea is to use money earmarked for prospective EU countries for the time being, reports the news site Politico Europe. Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has urged Ukraine in a letter to quickly push through a legislative package that will enable the disbursement of around 40 billion Swedish kronor.
The EU has already agreed to a loan to Ukraine of over 900 billion kronor, but Hungary is the only member state blocking the disbursement.
"As far as I know, the EU is considering an alternative. I think they will solve it," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday, according to the AFP news agency.
EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas hopes for a solution in time for the next EU summit, which will be held in Cyprus on April 23-24.
