Shiffrin was under some pressure after a weak first run in the final giant slalom in Lillehammer, where she only finished in 17th place. But things went better in the second run - Shiffrin finished eleventh - and any chance for Sundsvall-born German Emma Aicher to overtake her in the overall standings disappeared.
Previously, Annemarie Moser-Pröll, an Austrian alpine great of the 1970s, was the only one to have won the overall World Cup six times.
Sara Hector was second after the first run of the giant slalom in Lillehammer, but the Swede dropped to fourth in the second run.
