Explosions were reported at three locations in the city of Maiduguri, which is the capital of Borno state, including a market and the entrance to Maiduguri University Hospital, according to Sirajo Abdullahi, head of the country's emergency management agency, NEMA. A post office was also attacked.

"I heard a loud explosion and later discovered it was a bomb," said Alhaji Bukar Grema, who owns a telephone shop near one of the attack sites.

Unclear death toll

It is unclear how many people were killed and injured.

"We cannot give the actual figure," Sirajo Abdullahi said as rescue efforts were underway.

Testimonies and reports from journalists on the scene indicate many injured people sought hospital treatment. A number of bodies were lying near the hospital where the attack took place; the bodies were covered with pieces of cloth.

Police in Borno state said their bomb squads were investigating the three locations. The police said they were "three suspected suicide bombings."

Rival groups

The attack in the city of Maiduguri, a city of millions in northeastern Nigeria, follows suspected jihadists attacking a military post on the outskirts of the city on Monday night.

The jihadist movement Boko Haram and the rival group ISWAP have recently escalated their attacks in the northeastern part of the country.
