The new law means that parents must apply for childcare compensation (vab) no later than 30 days after the first day they stayed home with the child.

The rule also applies to parents who apply for ten days' compensation following the birth of a child. According to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, many parents make mistakes in the dates they report, and by shortening the application period, the agency hopes that the number of errors will decrease.

However, there are exceptions to the new rule. Anyone seeking compensation for days of mourning after losing a child or for caring for a seriously ill child has unlimited time to apply for compensation.
