Robert Golob leads a center-left coalition. His Freedom Movement party has 28.54 percent with just over 99 percent of the votes counted. Trump-friendly Janez Jansa's conservative SDS is on 28.17 percent.
Despite the small margins, Golob declared himself the winner late Sunday evening.
The result gives Golob's party 29 seats in the 90-seat parliament. SDS gets 28 seats.
That it would be a tie did not come as a surprise. The parties have been close in recent opinion polls.
