"We do not think these coastal stretches should be opened up for this type of establishment, but rather they should be directed to places where they are absolutely best suited," says Sweden's energy policy spokesperson Fredrik Olovsson.

He points to locations at the existing nuclear power plants in Ringhals, Forsmark and Oskarshamn.

"We say yes to new Swedish nuclear power on the coastal sections that can be used today," says Olovsson.

Is there acceptance?

The Tidö parties plan to open up the entire Swedish coast for new reactors, and if all goes well, the new law will come into effect on July 15 this year. Olovsson opposes nuclear power being built in new locations and gives as examples the Stockholm archipelago, the High Coast, the Bohus cliffs and Öland.

"These are not places that are particularly well suited for this type of activity at all. In the other places where we have acceptance, there is infrastructure, expertise and they are well balanced in terms of safety."

Promise to try to stop

C, V and MP also say no to the government's bill. Olovsson promises that if the Social Democrats win the election this fall, they will try to stop the plans.

"Yes, that's our whole point."

The government recently received an application from the company Kärnfull Next to build up to six modular reactors southeast of Valdemarsvik. The Swedish nuclear engineering company Blykalla has also shown interest in Norrsundet north of Gävle. Both are locations where there is currently no nuclear power.

Olovsson doesn't give much thought to these. He says the state should identify suitable locations for both nuclear power and offshore wind power.

"It is not up to the market to decide."

Minister of Labor and Acting Minister of Climate and Environment Johan Britz (L) is strongly critical of S's statement.

"The Social Democrats' hypocrisy about nuclear power is the most serious threat to Swedish independence in energy supply, competitiveness and the ability to achieve climate goals," he says.
