There was no historic Oscar for Sweden: Stellan Skarsgård did not win best supporting actor for the Norwegian film "Sentimental Value".

Presenter Kieran Culkin instead announced Sean Penn as the winner for the film "One Battle After Another." It's Penn's third Oscar, but the actor, known for going his own way, was not present at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to accept the award.

Sean Penn is instead in Ukraine, sources tell The New York Times.

Stellan Skarsgård would have become the first Swedish male actor to win an Oscar had he received the statuette.

Skarsgård told TT that most people predicted he would not win.

"But the ensemble held together because no one won, and we won the most important award, best international film," he wrote in a text message to TT.

“Film nerd from Norway”

The Norwegian film had nine nominations and thus won one - for best international film.

"I'm just a film nerd from Norway. This means everything to me," said director Joachim Trier on stage.

The action satire "One Battle After Another" received six awards, including best film and direction.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson, who also wrote the screenplay and produced the film, took home three awards from the gala.

The horror drama "Sinners" won a total of four awards - the statuette for best actor went to Michael B. Jordan, who plays two roles in the film.

Drove with Trump

Conan O'Brien hosted the gala for the second year in a row. He is not known for his political humor, but he made a couple of surprising jabs at President Donald Trump early in the show.

"We're broadcasting from the 'Have a Small Penis Theater.' I wonder if he wants to put his name on it too," O'Brien said after a commercial break.

Donald Trump has, among other things, renamed the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, after himself.

There have been many big names in film who have passed away in the past year. Billy Crystal led a tribute to Rob Reiner, the filmmaker who directed him in the classic "When Harry Met Sally."

In addition, Barbra Streisand spoke passionately about her late friend Robert Redford and ended by singing the theme song "The Way We Were" from the movie "The Way We Were," in which they both starred opposite each other.
