The arrests come after searches of the Russian-owned aluminum smelter Kubal, local media report. Police from the national task force, among others, took part.

Two people in senior positions at the company have been arrested as "reasonable suspects" - the lower level of suspicion.

The basis for assessing that the crime is serious is that it is extensive, widespread, systematic and of a particularly dangerous nature, says State Prosecutor Sara Nilsson, who is leading the preliminary investigation.

However, she would not confirm that it concerns the company Kubal. Sara Nilsson states that the suspicions concern violations of EU sanctions, crimes that are considered capable of harming security in Sweden and Europe, and that the crime is suspected to have been ongoing since 2023.

The criminal classification means that international sanctions have been violated, which aim to restrict the movement of goods, services and people linked to, for example, violations of international law.
